Plastic fiberglass Garden Egg Chair
Designer : Peter Ghyczy
In 1972, Peter Ghyczy set up his own furniture company, Ghyczy Selection, in the Dutch town of Swalmen, not far from the German border. "Given the conservative attitude of the producers, I decided to take control of production and distribution myself," he recalls. However, he did not include the garden egg chair in his range until 1998, when the original eggs suddenly came to fame again. To circumvent the problems originally encountered with the material, the garden egg chair, which is available in all RAL colours, is now manufactured from recyclable polystyrene instead of polyurethane. Today, 40 years on, among the other technoid-minimalist inspired pieces in the Ghyczy Selection, the egg chair has returned to what it always was: an adorable outsider.
The garden egg chair is a versatile piece of high-end furniture meant primarily for outdoor use, but by now also a true design classic dating from 1968. Its creator, Peter Ghyczy intended the chair for use in the garden as well as indoors, and because of this its particular features are well adjusted for a life outside. With the top folded up, the garden egg chair is a comfortable place to relax in, on its soft cushion interior. When flipped down, it turns into a stylish piece of garden art with a resistant exterior hiding the cushion away underneath its waterproof cover for all-weather use.
As of the year 2001, production of the original garden(egg)chair has returned to its roots, at Ghyczy Selection BV, and at its 40-year anniversary a specially designed limited edition of the textile cushion cover was released. Furthermore, the chair has been taken up in the Vitra Design Museum Miniatures Collection, certifying its importance among designer furniture.
